We’re all made of the same snow

One of the best things about living abroad in a multicultural country is learning about differences. I have always said that heterogeneous environments are healthier than homogeneous ones. The heterogeneity is a base of any institution that intends to survive in the current world.

Unfortunately it is not what we see in our ordinary life. How hard it is for some people to accept the difference. We heard lots of sad news throughout 2020 about racism, xenophobia, homophobia – a long list of phobias. How selfish we are, looking at ourselves, being rude with our own nature.

There is an advertisement from Tim Hortons – a Canadian multinational fast food restaurant chain, that I would like to share with you. I want to share this not just because I have felt represented on screen, but the message was so simple and deep. You can see it here.

I have attended different English Conversations Circles while living in Canada. They have always given me a new perspective about life and how we are so different and so similar at the same time – how similar we are in our differences.

Last week I was chatting with a friend about preconceptions. Preconceptions are ideas or opinions formed before enough information has been received – “pre” + “conception”.

My friend said how much she sees herself being prejudice, feeling an unreasonable dislike for something or someone. Even though she is an enlightened and intelligent person and yet, sometimes it just comes, she said. It made me think about my preconceptions, aware and unaware (the worst ones).

Unfortunately being aware is not enough. Similar to other character strengths, such as kindness, an effort has to be made. Coexisting with different people, might be the way to help develop more of an open mind. Let’s develop this point of view in 2021!

I wish you recognize yourself within the difference because “we’re all made of the same snow”.

Happy New Year!

Really love this blog. A lot of thought into it and I so believe in your comments. I think that The media has a lot to do with our preconceptions. People need to get to know each other and then they realize we are all the same.

I also love this blog because I got a great idea from it for the conversation circle. 😀😁
This is the third time I have written my comment and I keep losing it so let’s hope.

    Keep up the thought-provoking work.
