Sensory Coping
Recently I wrote about exploring sensory connections to bring joy and treat the homesick. This is a perspective on how the environment can trigger some memories, using them to our advantage. It made me want to write more about it, and be more deeply aware of coping skills.
Coping skills are under the soft skills umbrella, also known as personal skills. They are the opposite of hard skills, those that we learn in formal education. So, coping skills are developed throughout life experiences.
In my last post, I showed how our body and mind are closely connected. It might seem obvious, but usually we are not aware of that. For instance, even for those who already practice some sensory soothing, this could be much better if it is done consciously, as an effective approach.
So, let´s think about an effective approach, using sensory coping. What if we explore our five senses to connect or calm our emotions? As a first step, I suggest to you be aware of the sensory system and how it works.
Senses are transducers from the world to the mind, where people interpret the information and develop their perception of the world.
- Vision
- Hearing
- Touch
- Taste
- Smell
I invite you to think about each sense above, bringing to your mind an example of a pleasurable emotion through these senses.
See you next week to share more thoughts!
